A detailed look at a CNA’s daily routine at Kensington Park

At Kensington Park, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), also called Care Partners, are the essential workers of our senior living community.

Each day, they undertake a range of responsibilities, meticulously planned to ensure that all residents receive attentive and individualized care from the moment the day begins until it ends.

Here’s a glimpse into the typical day of a Care Partner/CNA at Kensington Park, although experiences can vary slightly for each individual.

Morning shift:

  • Initial briefing: The day kicks off with a detailed briefing for CNAs, where they are updated about the residents’ health conditions, special care instructions for the day, and any overnight changes or incidents.
  • Assistance with morning routines: CNAs assist residents with waking, personal hygiene (bathing, dental care, grooming), dressing, and preparing for the day. This personalized support is instrumental in promoting independence and ensuring that each resident starts their day with dignity and comfort.
  • Breakfast service and medication management: During breakfast, CNAs ensure that each resident’s dietary preferences and restrictions are respected, assisting with feeding when necessary.

Midday activities:

  • Continuous health checks: CNAs perform regular checks on residents to monitor their health and well-being and promptly address any needs or changes.
  • Support with lunch: CNAs assist residents to and at lunch, ensuring they receive meals tailored to their dietary needs and preferences and offering help with eating as required.
  • Facilitation of daily activities: CNAs actively participate in and assist the life enrichment team in facilitating activities promoting physical and cognitive health, such as memory games, light exercise classes, or arts and crafts sessions. These activities are integral to resident engagement and maintaining a vibrant community atmosphere.

Afternoon shift:

  • Personal care and comfort: CNAs continue to assist with personal care needs and ensure comfort throughout the afternoon, addressing any specific resident requests or requirements.
  • One-on-one engagement: CNAs dedicate time to engage individually with residents, fostering personal connections through conversation, reading together, or engaging in a resident’s hobby. This helps deepen the communal bonds and provides vital emotional support.

Evening Routine:

  • Evening meal and preparation for the night: CNAs assist with the dinner service and begin preparing residents for the evening, helping with nighttime routines such as changing into nightwear and assisting with personal hygiene.
  • End-of-day documentation: CNAs update resident care logs with comprehensive notes on the care provided throughout the day, noting any significant health or behavioral observations.
  • Handover to night shift: Before their shift ends, CNAs ensure all pertinent information is passed on to the incoming night shift team, discussing each resident’s status to guarantee continuous and seamless care.
