A Day in the Life at Kensington Park: Spotlight on Our Certified Nursing Assistants

At Kensington Park Senior Living, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are at the heart of every meaningful moment. Their hands-on support, compassionate presence, and unwavering commitment help residents live with dignity, joy, and purpose every single day.

If you’re considering a CNA role in senior living, you may be wondering what a typical day looks like. Is it high-pressure? Is it all medical care? Or is it a balance of clinical support, emotional connection, and shared purpose?

This article takes you inside a real day in the life of a CNA in senior living at Kensington Park Senior Living, from early morning routines to late-night peace of mind.

You’ll walk alongside CNAs as they assist residents with daily tasks, share laughter and stories, and become part of something much bigger than a job.

Our Promise is to love and care for your family as we do our own.

Morning: Starting the Day with Respect and Routine

The day begins with intention. CNAs arrive ready to support residents through their morning routines, often the most vulnerable part of the day for those with mobility challenges or memory loss.

Each CNA is assigned to a small group of residents to ensure consistency and trust. Mornings include:

  • Helping residents wake gently and get out of bed safely
  • Assisting with dressing, grooming, and personal hygiene
  • Providing mobility support or using adaptive equipment
  • Taking vitals and noting any physical or cognitive changes

Breakfast is more than a meal, it’s a social moment. CNAs ensure each resident is seated comfortably, has the appropriate meal consistency (soft, pureed, low-sodium, etc.), and gets any necessary assistance with feeding.

Mid-Morning: Engagement, Mobility, and Connection

By mid-morning, residents may participate in fitness classes, group discussions, or arts-based activities. CNAs help transport residents safely to these enrichment programs, ensuring they’re included regardless of physical or cognitive ability.

Some may assist in:

  • Accompanying a resident on a walk through the garden
  • Helping someone practice range-of-motion exercises
  • Offering gentle reminders or cues during memory activities
  • Sitting with a resident who prefers quiet, one-on-one conversation

The work is physical, but also deeply relational. CNAs are often the first to notice small changes in behavior or mood, which are quickly relayed to nursing and care coordination teams.

Our CNAs play a vital role in personalized care plans because they’re there in the small, day-to-day moments that matter most.

Midday: Team Support and Resident Advocacy

Lunchtime is another opportunity to show love through service. CNAs assist with:

  • Escorting residents to the dining room or helping them dine in-suite
  • Monitoring fluid intake and appetite
  • Ensuring comfort and dignity during all mealtime interactions
  • Communicating with nurses about medication schedules or physical symptoms

After lunch, there’s a team huddle. CNAs, nurses, life enrichment specialists, and others check in on resident needs and adjust care plans as needed. This collaborative, interdisciplinary approach ensures no resident falls through the cracks.

At Kensington Park Senior Living, team members consistently support one another, covering breaks, offering help during lifting transfers, and sharing encouragement throughout the shift.

Afternoon: Rest, Reassurance, and Gentle Redirection

As the day winds into the afternoon, many residents enjoy downtime in their suites, one-on-one visits, or personalized activities in quieter spaces.

For CNAs, this time includes:

  • Offering comfort care for residents who are feeling anxious or disoriented
  • Supporting toileting, hygiene, and rest as needed
  • Helping with gentle redirection for those experiencing memory-related confusion
  • Checking supplies and refreshing linens in resident suites

CNAs are often called upon to sit and listen simply, whether it’s a story from someone’s past, or a moment of quiet companionship.

In memory care, these human-to-human moments can mean more than words can express.

Explore how our Kensington Club, Connection, and Haven neighborhoods support residents through each stage of memory loss, with CNAs at the heart of the approach.

Evening: Winding Down with Comfort and Consistency

Dinner is typically a more relaxed time, with soft music, warm lighting, and familiar smells helping residents transition into the evening. CNAs continue to assist with mobility, feeding, and hygiene.

After dinner, many residents engage in calming activities, music therapy, movies, or reminiscing circles.

CNAs may help prepare residents for bed, offering:

  • Pajama and toileting support
  • Nighttime hygiene routines
  • Medication reminders (in coordination with nurses)
  • Reassurance and comfort during sundowning episodes

By the time the sun sets, CNAs have helped dozens of residents feel seen, supported, and loved.

CNAs are often called upon to sit and listen simply, whether it’s a story from someone’s past or a moment of quiet companionship. These human-to-human connections mean more than words.
