Musical Notes with Melissa: Music Therapy at Kensington Park

Melissa Pate

In my (almost) six years working as a Music Therapist, I’ve only met a handful of people who have said that they definitively do not enjoy music. Usually when I ask people if they like music, their first response is, “I can’t play any instruments!” The good news is that you don’t have to be a musician to love music. Music is intertwined in our lives, whether it’s the lullabies our moms sang to us, the First Dance at our weddings, or even just a song we listened to over and over with our friends in high school. One of the goals of KP’s music therapy team is to offer music programming in all 3 buildings. We are so fortunate to have Directors & Activity Coordinators who not only support our programming, but also help us to brainstorm how we can tailor the programs to best meet resident needs. Here is what we currently offer in each building:

Highlands
Handbell Choir – 1st & 3rd Sundays of the Month
Highlands Chorus – 2nd & 4th Sundays of the Month

Woodlands
Music Therapy Support Group – Wednesday afternoons

Groves
Music in Motion (Haven) – Wednesday afternoons
