Musical Notes with Melissa: A Month of Hope

Melissa Pate

“Though April showers may come your way, they bring the flowers that bloom in May.” I read somewhere that April is that national month of “hope,” which is all about celebrating the power of hope – the belief that things will work out, even when it doesn’t feel that way. I’ve thought about songs within my own life that have pulled me through hard times, and I wonder what songs in our residents’ lives did the same.

I took a little survey at lunchtime in the Woodlands, and here are some songs that our residents said gave them hope. 1. You’ll Never Walk Alone 2. Smile by Nat King Cole 3. Hatikva (Israeli song) 4. God Bless America 5. On Eagle’s Wings 6. Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Other residents mentioned artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Burt Bachrach, as well as noted many songs from church that lifted their spirits. Take a few moments today to think of a song that makes you feel hopeful, and remember it the next time you need a lift in your spirits!
