Dear Residents, Families, and Friends,
We are excited to continue our Intergenerational Choir in the Highlands building this Fall! Middle school singers from Silver Creek Middle School will be joining our Highlands High Notes Choir each week for choir rehearsals, culminating in a final performance. The theme of our Fall Intergenerational Choir Program is a Tribute to Tony Bennett. Our Highlands residents are enjoying singing some of Bennett’s famous classics while teaching our middle school singers about him!
Here’s more on Tony Bennett and his life:
Anthony Dominick Benedetto (August 3, 1926 – July 21, 2023), otherwise known as Tony Bennett, was an American singer born in Astoria, New York, in 1926. His career spanned over seven decades and his signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” is an iconic classic. Bennett served in the U.S. Army during World War II, which deeply influenced his musical journey. In addition to his successful career, he is also known for his philanthropic work, particularly in supporting arts education. In February 2021, it was revealed that Tony Bennett had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Bennett’s family decided to share the news with the public to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and to honor his legacy. Even though he faced cognitive challenges, Tony’s family said he still recognized family and friends and enjoyed singing. Bennett continued performing up until his 95th birthday, and after his retirement, continued rehearsals with his music director every week. Bennett’s diagnosis highlighted the importance of understanding and supporting those living with Alzheimer’s and the need for continued research into the disease.
Today, Tony Bennett continues to be a cherished figure in the music industry, leaving a mark on the hearts of generations. Our Intergenerational Choir is excited to honor Tony Bennett’s legacy through song!
