Friendsgiving is a celebration of friendship and giving back to the community; and one of the best ways to celebrate Friendsgiving during the holiday season is to support the businesses and organizations that are serving your community.
One such celebration is Kensington Park’s 7th Annual Friendsgiving Food Drive.
This year’s food drive was hosted at Kensington Park Senior Living on November 17th to benefit Mid-County United Ministries (MUM), which is one of the organizations that Kensington Park partners with to help the community.
This local non-profit provides a safety net for the working poor, disabled, elderly on fixed incomes, and unemployed. Specifically, MUM helps people in crisis in the Silver Spring, Wheaton, Kensington, Rockville, and Aspen Hill communities with food, medicine, eviction prevention, and more.
The goal of MUM is to help assist these members of our communities until their situation improves, allowing them the opportunity to get back on their feet.
MUM’s goals align directly with Kensington Park’s passion for supporting our community, which includes our residents and their families.
Kensington Park Annual Food Drive
On November 17th, Kensington Park Senior Living “stuffed the truck” with donations.
To “stuff the truck,” we filled up a large moving truck with our donations and delivered it directly to MUM.
This year, we received more than $2,000 in checks and Safeway or Giant gift cards, and well over 30 large boxes of food.
The event began in 2016 when Executive Director Mary Mell wanted to give back to the local community during the season of gratitude, and Friendsgiving was born!
Other senior living professionals in the community were also asked to be a part of the celebration, including our co-host GROWS (Grass Roots Organization for the Wellbeing of Seniors), which is a longstanding advocacy group of senior living professionals.
Accepted donations include:
- Non-perishable items or canned goods
- $25 gift cards to Safeway or Giant
- Checks made payable to Mid-County United Ministries
Our annual food drive is also a professional networking celebration with our senior living colleagues.
Chef Morissa and the team provided delicious light bites throughout the event for all who stopped by, including hot cocoa and apple cider.
Families and residents have a chance to donate all month long via drop-boxes on our campus.
All proceeds will directly benefit MUM’s mission to serve your neighbors in need.
How Kensington Park Senior Living devotes care to benefit seniors, their families, and the community
Kensington Park Senior Living offers independent living, assisted living, and three levels of memory care, and our care extends into the local community, as well.
Part of this extended care includes helping our family members navigate caregiver challenges, as well as the difficult dynamics and decisions involved in moving a loved one to a community.
To support these families, we offer numerous caregiver resources such as Kensington Konnect, in addition to events and one-on-one communication with families.
During the holiday season, we host an annual Giving Tuesday event; provide tips and resources for navigating the holidays as a caregiver; and more.
In the past, we’ve hosted community events such as our National Night Out block party and numerous Alzheimer’s disease and dementia caregiver and educational events.
