This informative session is designed to provide seniors with a clear and comprehensive overview of Social Security, including how it works, when to start claiming benefits, and the factors that can affect your payments. We’ll cover essential topics such as eligibility requirements, how to estimate your benefits, and the pros and cons of claiming early versus waiting. Additionally, we’ll discuss the impact of working while receiving benefits, how Social Security ties into retirement planning, and common myths and misconceptions.

Diana Varela began her career with the Social Security Administration in New Orleans, Louisiana in May 1995. During her career with the agency, she has held Claims Representative and Field Representative positions before her appointment as a Bilingual Public Affairs Specialist in January 2003. She has been working on outreach activities since then to promote understanding of Social Security Programs and benefits for residents of the Washington Metropolitan area.
