Kensington Park Offers Parkinson’s Wellness Classes through PFNCA Partnership

At Kensington Park Senior Living, our mission is to improve and preserve the quality of life for every resident – including those that live with Parkinson’s disease. Since 2015, Kensington Park has enjoyed a great relationship with the Parkinson’s Foundation of the National Capital Area (PFNCA) to provide wellness classes to help those with Parkinson’s slow its progression.

Through this partnership, Kensington Park offers a Communication Club, which focuses on the maintenance of communication skills; Musical Choir, which enhances projection through breath support while singing familiar tunes; and Boxing for Parkinson’s, which helps improve balance, cardio, coordination and strength. You can view a sample of the Boxing for Parkinson’s class here.

These programs are led by certified professionals in the areas of speech therapy, music therapy, and physical therapy who have undergone specialized training to specifically address the effects of Parkinson’s disease.

Kensington Park’s very own Melissa Pate, MT, facilitates the PFNCA Musical Choir. Melissa is a licensed neurological music therapist that specializes in music interventions for speech and motor rehabilitation in individuals with Parkinson’s Disease.

“Kensington Park has been a tremendous partner with our organization,” said PFNCA President & CEO Jared Cohen. “They are committed to providing exceptional opportunities to help people slow Parkinson’s.”

Kensington Park also supports PFNCA’s annual awareness walk, Walk Off Parkinson’s, as part of Team Kensington Senior Living and sponsors the organization’s annual educational conference – the PFNCA Symposium.

Awareness and education go a long way in supporting those affected by Parkinson’s disease, and Kensington Park is committed to offering the community and resources to support!
