Alzheimer’s FAQ

Depending on where you are in your Alzheimer’s care journey, you’re likely to have many questions. Let’s start with a few basic questions.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that leads to trouble with memory, thinking, and sometimes behavior. It is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of all cases. As a progressive disease, with symptoms worsening over time, Alzheimer’s has no cure. However, we can improve the quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones.

Whether your loved one is suffering from early-, middle-, or advanced-stage Alzheimer’s disease, the Kensington offers the specialized treatment, tools, environment, and compassion necessary to provide each individual the support they need. We love and care for your family as we do our own.

What are the stages of Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease typically progresses slowly in three general stages — mild (early stage), moderate (middle-stage), and severe (late-stage). Since Alzheimer’s affects people in different ways, the timing and severity of dementia symptoms vary as each person progresses through the stages of Alzheimer’s differently.

What are the leading causes of Alzheimer’s?

While the exact causes of Alzheimer’s disease aren’t fully understood, scientists believe that for most people, Alzheimer’s disease is a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time.

Less than 1 percent of the time, Alzheimer’s is caused by specific genetic changes that virtually guarantee a person will develop the disease. These rare occurrences usually result in disease onset in middle age.

Specialized Memory Care Communities

We believe that each resident deserves to live in a community that is best suited for them and their individual degree of memory loss. To ensure that our residents receive the most beneficial and appropriate care for their individual circumstances, we distinguish our community into two different “neighborhoods.”

The Connections Neighborhood

Connections is designed for residents who are experiencing early-to-middle stages of Alzheimer’s, and provides an intimate and comfortable environment. As such, the neighborhood is made to care for those who are showing intensifying signs of memory loss.

  • Anxiety
  • Fear of getting lost
  • Isolation
  • Depression
  • Decreased confidence
  • Difficulty completing everyday tasks without reminders
  • Agitation and confusion in the later afternoon/early evening (“sun-downing”)

In Connections, we strive to help residents be independent and active, guiding them to find purpose and meaning with their daily interactions and socialization. We stay attuned to our residents’ maximum cognitive abilities and recall in order to make the most of their strengths and abilities, in order to support them and their families.

  • Structure and routine for each day
  • Fully secured
  • Comfortable home-like spaces, filled with sounds and smells found in our homes such as laughter, music, pets, and baking
  • Areas for fresh air and sunshine
  • Pets welcome
  • Resources to monitor whereabouts

The Haven Neighborhood

Designed for those residents who are showing advancing signs of memory loss, Haven provides peace and security for those with middle-to-late stages of Alzheimer’s.

  • Difficulty identifying family and friends
  • Difficulty managing daily activities and good hygiene
  • Agitation and confusion in the later afternoon/early evening (“sun-downing”)

We commit our efforts to a foundation of care that creates a safe and soothing space with minimal agitation and an abundance of compassion, giving individuals that require more assistance a level of care to match their needs.

  • Structure and routine for each day
  • Fully secured
  • Resources to monitor whereabouts
  • Comfortable home-like spaces, filled with sounds and smells found in our homes such as laughter, music, pets, and baking
  • Pets welcome
  • Lots of natural light and areas for fresh air
  • Adaptive design features (to help with recognition)
